Cases

Architecture and data integration work in regulated industries, drawn from more than thirty years of practice.

Client names are withheld. Engagements were led by Sequence Inc.’s principal architect, Mehdi Hatami, some of them through partner firms.

Data architecture for sports betting and online wagering

A provincial gaming operator was launching sports betting and online wagering platforms that had to work inside its existing enterprise data and reporting environment.

Sports betting platforms feed real-time data integration, which feeds enterprise data and reporting, under data governance.
Illustrative architecture, simplified.

We defined and delivered the solution architecture and the data architecture for the platforms, working with operations and technology teams so that the sports systems aligned with the enterprise’s data and reporting frameworks. Data integration and governance were directed to keep information synchronized in real time and its integrity intact.

Data warehousing for rate planning and energy analysis

Organizations across the energy industry, among them a regulator, a power generation company and a gas utility, needed data from power generators and distributors brought together so it could support rate planning and the analysis of energy production and usage.

Data from power generators and distributors is collected into a data warehouse supporting rate planning, energy pricing, and production and usage analysis.
Illustrative architecture, simplified.

The central piece was a data warehouse that collects data from utility power generators and distributors to support rate planning and the analysis of production and usage.

Related work spanned the sector: a consolidation roadmap for an energy regulator, aligned with an industry-standard warehouse model; a multi-division warehouse with OLAP for energy pricing and planning at a generation company; and, at a gas utility, the re-engineering of legacy customer information systems with enterprise data models for customer data integration.

Retail lottery and distribution modernization

A provincial gaming operator was modernizing its retail lottery and distribution systems, a program that meant moving large volumes of operational data between platforms.

Legacy retail lottery and distribution systems are migrated and integrated into a modernized platform, with traceability, data quality and compliance.
Illustrative architecture, simplified.

We defined and implemented the enterprise IT and data strategies for the modernization and directed the large-scale data integration and migration, keeping the migrated data traceable, high in quality and compliant with regulatory requirements.

Real-time and batch data integration for telematics

A telematics company needed a cloud-based way to capture and integrate telemetry and IoT data.

Telemetry and IoT data flows through Kafka for real-time ingestion and Azure Data Factory for batch ingestion into an Azure data platform.
Illustrative architecture, simplified.

We designed and implemented a data integration architecture on Microsoft Azure, with both real-time and batch ingestion pipelines built on Azure Data Factory and Kafka to streamline how telemetry was captured.

Connecting a national telecom with SaaS providers

A national telecommunications provider needed its internal enterprise systems to exchange data reliably with external SaaS platforms.

An integration framework using Informatica and secure APIs exchanges customer, billing and loyalty data between internal systems and SaaS providers.
Illustrative architecture, simplified.

We architected a data integration framework linking the internal systems with SaaS providers, built on Informatica and secure APIs, so that customer, billing and loyalty program data could be exchanged seamlessly across platforms.

Enterprise data warehouse at a major Canadian bank

A major Canadian bank was consolidating its analytics environment and, in a later engagement, converting its credit card platform.

Source systems including a converted credit card platform flow through re-engineered ETL into an enterprise data warehouse serving consolidated data marts and downstream systems.
Illustrative architecture, simplified.

The first engagement produced the data warehouse roadmap, the consolidation of data marts and the modernization of integration for enterprise-wide analytics.

The second enhanced the enterprise warehouse to support the credit card platform conversion, re-engineering ETL processes and redesigning data integration to address the impact on downstream systems.

Data warehouse and BI platform migration

A gaming operator was moving its data warehouse from SQL Server on Windows to IBM DB2 on AIX.

A data warehouse is migrated from SQL Server on Windows to IBM DB2 on AIX, with ETL re-engineered in DataStage and Cognos BI upgraded for web publishing.
Before and after the migration. Illustrative, simplified.

We managed the architecture redesign and the platform migration, re-engineered the ETL processes with Ascential DataStage, and upgraded the Cognos BI suite to support dynamic web publishing of reports.
